In the mid 1990s we released a flock of plastic flamingos into the wild in the woods behind our home.  This is their story.

fl_06When we got married Tom Bruce and Judith Pratt gave us a pair of pink flamingo lawn ornaments as a wedding gift. Then, when we bought our new house they forgot and gave us another pair. Dan decided they ought to live in the woods, and Karen agreed with the stipulation that they must not be seen from the house. So our Flamingo Colony was born, and the four flamingos lived happily in the woods. We took Ben for nature walks in the woods (Allison is now old enough to go, too), and when we "discovered" the flamingos a good time was had by all.


Ben got Dan a great "Flamingo Crossing" sign, which we put at the foot of the bridge that goes over our stream and leads to the part of the woods where the flamingo colony is.

pw2This May a new flamingo came to our house from Minnesota. It is a different variety from the ones already in our flamingo preserve. We decided to release it into the wild and see how well it does.

Last Christmas a pair of Snowmingos joined our family. We waited until today to release them into the wild, because the woods were so muddy.

But today is a beautiful day, and we were raring to go. Unfortunately, Allison's bird lost a leg. So we searched and we searched until we found it.

Ben released his bird, and then watched proudly as his sister released hers. Allison had cleverly worn a magenta sweatshirt so the birds would think she was one of them, and not be startled.
